|About the Conference|
Science Spectrum magazine's Minorities in Research Science (MIRS) conference is a forum in which the issues behind the headlines -shortage of women and minorities in science and engineering, the aging U.S. science workforce, increasing global competition for scientific and technical talent - can be addressed and solutions are sought. Over a two-day period minority scientists from private and public research centers meet with industry and academic decision-makers to discuss what it will take to open the doors of the scientific enterprise to an increasing share of the college-age population who come from groups under-represented in the sciences. The conference raises public awareness of the important contributions of minority men and women in science. The MIRS Emerald Honors awards provide high-profile recognition of their achievements that would otherwise go unheralded. The Emeralds showcase not only the achievements of minorities producing the innovation that powers American industry, but also of corporate leaders who see the possibilities and opportunities to be gained by blending diverse talents and abilities.
